Not a single South Asian airline has been named in a list charting the top 20 safest airlines in the world, according to an annual study of the world’s biggest airlines.

Emirates and Etihad Airways have been named in the top 20, according to Australia based AirlineRatings.com.

Each year the airline review website studies airline safety and bases its rankings on audits from aviation governing bodies, government audits, airline's crash and serious incident records and fleet age.

The top 20 airlines in alphabetical order are: Air New Zealand, Alaska Airlines, All Nippon Airways, British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, Emirates, Etihad Airways, EVA Air, Finnair, Hawaiian Airlines, Japan Airlines, KLM, Lufthansa, Qantas, Royal Jordanian Airlines, Scandinavian Airline System, Singapore Airlines, Swiss, Virgin Atlantic and, Virgin Australia.

According to AirlineRatings.com Editor-in-Chief Geoffrey Thomas, these airlines are standouts in the industry and are at the forefront of safety, innovation, and launching of new aircraft.
