US clears American, US Airways merger with conditions

The US government on Tuesday cleared the proposed merger between American Airlines and US Airways after they agreed to give up slots and gates at seven key airports. American Airlines's parent, AMR Corp. and US Airways to divest the slots and gates to "low-cost" airlines "in order to enhance system-wide competition in the airline industry resulting in more choices and more competitive airfares for consumers," the Justice Department said in a statement.
