Italian authorities: Nearly 700 immigrants rescued off Sicily

Nearly 700 refugees were rescued off Sicily in several operations, Italian authorities said Friday, as European leaders grapple with the issue of illegal immigration at a European Union summit. In a series of separate rescue bids, coastguards rescued several boats, one of which was carrying 219 people, including 37 children and 43 women, officials said.
