France: No assault or ransom to free Niger hostages

France did not pay ransom or launch a military assault to free four nationals kidnapped in Niger three years ago, Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said Tuesday. "There was no assault. There was an initiative taken by the networks of (Niger President Mahamadou Issoufou) which permitted a liberation without clashes," he told France's TF1 network, also denying that ransom had been paid.
