A Bangladeshi court convicted dozens of soldiers on Tuesday at the start of a mass verdict over a 2009 military mutiny in which scores of officers were massacred. At a special court in Dhaka, Judge Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman convicted the first 50 soldiers and sentenced them to jail terms of up to 14 years for their role in the 30-hour mutiny. Some 823 soldiers allegedly took part in the killing of 74 people including top army officers who were hacked to death, tortured and burnt alive before their bodies were dumped in sewers and shallow graves.
