Congress passes bill to raise US debt ceiling

The United States was spared the ignominy of a first debt default as Congress passed a bill late Wednesday extending the nation's borrowing authority and ending a two-week government shutdown. After approval by the Senate, the measure passed the House of Representatives with broad bipartisan support. The measure now goes to President Barack Obama for his signature.
