Haidar Glokoma, the governor of west Darfur
Khartoum - Abed Algayom Ashmeag
Haidar Glokoma, the governor of west Darfur Khartoum - Abed Algayom Ashmeag Haidar Glokoma, the governor of west Darfur, has said the war-torn Sudanese region is now "close to stability".“We have almost achieved stability and peace. The central government, state governments and the regional authorities have to set up priorities, regardless of the departure of Ahmed Abd Al-Shafea (the vice president of the Liberation and Justice Movement [LJM])," said Glokoma in an interview with Arabstoday. “The rehabilitation of displaced people to their own homes is our main challenge,” he said. Glokoma, who was appointed Darfur governor as per the Doha agreement, said: “Vice president Ali Othman Taha promised to take more steps towards development and investment in infrastructure projects." He added: “The agreement won’t be affected with Abd Al-Shafea's withdrawal from the LJM, as the split is considered a personal loss and was unfavourable.“ As for Sudan's relationship with Chad, Glokoma said: "The improvement in relations has contributed to stability and security on the borders between Darfur and Chad from one side and between Sudan and Chad from the other.” He added: “During the strained relations between the two countries, armed outfits used Chad as a base for their operations against the Sudanese government, where the LJM blocked the peace process.” He continued: “As a vice president to the regional authority, I think that international parties have to support peace in the region and help in regional development and reconstruction.” Glokoma also thanked Qatari leaders for their role in financially supporting the agreement. “All citizens support the Doha agreement and looking forward to its results,” he said. Talking of armed movements, he said: “It's peacetime and we all should support the peace process.” Glokoma said the era of Muammar Gaddafi, allegedly the biggest supporter of armed groups, was over; because of security plans and military operations, armed activity was reduced.
