Abdelilah Benkirane, Secretary General of Justice and Development Party
Rabat - Arab Today

The General secretariat of the Justice and Development Party (PJD) has  announced the party’s endorsement of the latest decision of its Secretary General and appointed head of Government, Abdelilah Benkirane, with regard to ending deliberations with both Aziz Akhannouch, Secretary General of the National Rally of Independents Party (RNI), and Mohand Laenser, Secretary-General of Popular Movement (MP).

The endorsement follows Benkirane’s announcement on Sunday that  “… talks with Akhannouch and Laesner are over.”

On Monday, as soon as their exceptional meeting ended, the PJD members issued a communiqué, stating that the PJD fully support Benkirane’s position and is proud of his message.”

Seeking to provide a reason behind Benkirane’s decision to end the talks with Akhannouch and Laenser, Benkirane told reporters on Monday, “I was waiting for the answer of the proposal that I presented to Akhannouch regarding whether or not he would participate in the government. He [Akhannouch] promised to answer me within two days, but he did not. He preferred to answer me with an inked statement, in collaboration with other parties [the Constitutional Union Party and Socialist Union of Popular Forces Party], that I have not spoken with.”

“Therefore, I conclude that he [Akhannouch] is in a position where he will not answer me, and the negotiations to form a government cannot continue. For this reason, negotiations have ended with him, and the same applies to Laenser,” Benkirane continued.

Since his appointment as Head of Government on October 10th, Benkirane is currently facing a dilemma. His ongoing mission remains forming a coalition government and finding a solution to what has become commonly known to Moroccans as the “Government Blockage.”
