Khartoum - Abedalgoum Ashmeag
A comprehensive initiative to apprehend illegal weapons in Darfur is underway, as the Sudanese government called for an arms amnesty across the region. Over the course of the next six months, the Sudanese government expects to register approximately 30,000 weapons, in attempts to reduce violence in Darfur. According to a United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur [UNAMID] statement, a two-day event in El Geneina, partly organised by the Interior Ministry, aims to raise awareness about the need to surrender illegally owned weapns. Nearly 200 participants from governmental bodies, the diplomatic community, unions and non-governmental organisations are attending the event. 10 local leaders, each representing a different tribe, were among the first to register or surrender their weapons, in what has been seen as a goodwill gesture by local residents. Organisers said all weapons not surrendered or not licensed after six months -- a period which could be subject to extension -- would be considered illegal.
