UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed Armida Alisjahbana of Indonesia as chief of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, Deputy Spokesman Farhan Haq announced Friday.
Ms. Alisjahbana will succeed Ms. Shamshad Akhtar of Pakistan, a former State Bank governor who recently served the interim government of Prime Minister Nasir-ul Mulk as the finance minister.
Ms. Alisjahbana is currently a professor of economics at Padjadjaran University in Bandung, Indonesia. From 2009 to 2014, she was minister of national development planning of Indonesia.
Established in 1947 with its headquarters in Bangkok, Thailand, ESCAP works to overcome some of the region’s greatest economic challenges by providing results-oriented projects, technical assistance and capacity building to member States in various areas.
