The sons of dissident Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi say their family is unable to grieve or find closure until they can give their father a proper burial.

Salah and Abdullah Khashoggi made the comments in an interview Sunday with CNN, adding they have faith that those responsible for their father's death will be brought to justice.

"All that we want right now is to bury him in Al-Baqi [cemetery] in Medina [in Saudi Arabia] with the rest of his family," Khashoggi's eldest son Salah said. "I talked about that with the Saudi authorities and I just hope that it happens soon."

"The King Salman has stressed that everybody involved will be brought to justice. And I have faith in that. This will happen," he added.

The brothers, who described Khashoggi as a "moderate man" who "loved his country" and "believed in the monarchy," said that all they know at this stage is that something "bad" happened to their father.

"I am really hoping that whatever happened wasn't painful for him, or it was quick. Or he had a peaceful death," Abdullah said.

"I'm just waiting for the facts to come out," Salah added. "For me it's just death. I know that he is dead."

Just two days earlier, the Washington Post published an opinion piece by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan where he claimed that the order to kill the journalist "came from the highest levels of the Saudi government."

Khashoggi was strangled moments after entering Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul on October 2, Istanbul's chief prosecutor said Wednesday, adding that his body was then dismembered and disposed of in a premeditated operation.
