Jens Laerke
Geneva - Egypt Today

United Nations humanitarian Spokesman Jens Laerke expressed Tuesday the UN's great concern for the lives of the remained civilians in Iraq's Hawija, after the military operations had been launched to liberate the city from Daesh.

In a press conference, Laerke said that the number of people who fled the fighting increased from 7,000 people during the first week of the operation to 12,500 people, noting that the accurate number of the remained in Hawija maybe reach 78,000 people.

The UN humanitarian Spokesman stressed the necessity of protecting the civilians in all times and to allow them to get outside Hawija safely.

He pointed out that over two thirds of the 7,000 people, who fled, are in Salah Al Din, Kirkuk and Nenawa refugee camps.
