Tokyo stocks opened sharply higher Friday on better outlook for the global economic recovery following strong manufacturing data from China, Europe and the United States.
At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 229.78 points, or 1.72 percent, from Thursday at 13,594.95.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 16.91 points, or 1.51 percent, at 1, 136.47.
