Doha - QNA
Striker Ahmed Hammadi and goalkeeper Noor Sabri were the heroes as Iraq recorded a much-needed first win of the final round of qualifiers for the 2014 FIFA World Cup after edging out Jordan 1-0 on Wednesday.
Jordan enjoyed the better of the chances during a tight contest at Al Arabi Stadium, but with four minutes remaining Hammadi broke the deadlock in spectacular fashion with an unstoppable strike from the edge of the penalty area.
And then with less than a minute remaining Sabri produced a superb double save to deny Jordan substitute Hamza Al Dardour as Zico’s youthful Iraq side, who were without veteran duo Younus Mahmood and Nashat Akram, recorded a first win in Group B to join Australia and Oman in a tie for second place on five points.
