Fort Larned roared to a stunning victory in the $5 million Breeders\' Cup Classic, holding off Mucho Macho Man and leaving favorite Game On Dude in the shade. Fort Larned, trained by Ian Wilkes and ridden by Brian Hernandez, on Saturday took the lead into the first turn and extended it to nearly two lengths on the backstretch. He then held on during a furious duel in the final straight to beat Mucho Macho Man by half a length in the richest horse race in North America. \"He was gaining on us, but our horse wasn\'t going to let him by,\" said Hernandez, who called the win a perfect 27th birthday present. Flat Out was third as Game On Dude, never beaten in five prior starts on the dirt track at Santa Anita, finished seventh in the 12-horse field in the 1 1/4-mile race that capped the two-day, 15-race Breeders\' Cup slate worth a total of $25 million. Game On Dude, trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Rafael Bejarano, went off as the 6-5 favorite to avenge a heart-breaking defeat in the Classic last year at Churchill Downs. Instead, Baffert remained in search of a first Breeders\' Cup Classic win. Australian-born Wilkes said it was an advantage for his horse to be somewhat under the radar coming in. \"We could really do what we wanted to do without having that bullseye,\" Wilkes said. Game On Dude got out of the gate slowly as Fort Larned broke well. As Fort Larned held the lead, Mucho Macho Man -- the co-second choice at 6-1 with Flat Out -- pressed him from the outside with Mike Smith aboard. To Honor and Serve was running third with Game On Dude in sixth. The top two kept their positions around the final turn. Game On Dude briefly pushed into third but faded in the straight.
