The Indianapolis Colts fired head coach Jim Caldwell on Tuesday, six days after bringing in new general manager Ryan Grigson.
The firing follows the Colts dismal 2-14 season which resulted in them landing the first-overall pick in the National Football League entry draft.
\"This was a difficult decision,\" said Colts chief executive Jim Irsay.
\"I think that it was based on the feeling that this was a direction the franchise needed to go, and I wanted to make sure that we took all the time we needed to make sure that it was the right decision.\"
In three seasons as Indianapolis\' head coach, Caldwell recorded a 26-22 regular season record and a 2-2 mark in the playoffs.
He led the Colts to a record of 14-2 with a Super Bowl loss to New Orleans after taking over from Tony Dungy at the beginning of the 2009 season.
Grigson was hired last Wednesday.
