Jordan condemns intrusion into Aqsa mosque

Jordan condemned on Tuesday the storming of Al Aqsa mosque by two Israeli Knesset members under the protection of Israeli police.
Petra news agency quoted Minister of State for Media Affairs and Communications and Government Spokesman Mohammed Al Momani as saying that the Israeli decision to lift the ban on visits by Israeli lawmakers to the mosque was irresponsible and would fuel tension in the holy site.
He called on the Israeli government to stop such provocative steps and put an end to such visits.
He expressed hope for the success of US good offices to relaunch Palestinian-Israeli talks on the basis of the two-state solution and relevant international terms of reference.
Israeli lawmakers visited Al Aqsa mosque compound on Tuesday for the first time in two years.
The visit by Knesset members Yehuda Glick and Shuli Mualem-Rafaeli, which passed peacefully, was meant to test the waters as Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government mulls whether to allow such visits to resume. They were banned in late 2015 for fear of sparking tensions.
The Israeli Ynetnews site reported that the visit was part of a pilot program allowing Knesset members to make visits to the compound that have been coordinated with police.
