A speeding and overloaded passenger bus overturned in rural southeast Zimbabwe, killing 12 passengers and severely injuring another seven, state media reported Tuesday.
Police in Masvingo province said the commuter bus, a second- hand Nissan Caravan, was speeding along the Roy-Chiredzi Road Monday, when the driver failed to negotiate a curve and lost control of the vehicle. The bus, whose maximum passenger load is 15, was carrying 23 people when the accident occurred.
Zimbabwe's Transport and Infrastructure Development Minister Obert Mpofu has urged all motorists to adhere to traffic regulations before, during and after the festive season to avoid loss of lives.
Road crashes are common in Zimbabwe, especially during the festive seasons when more people hit the roads. Traffic accidents claimed 180 lives during the Christmas season last year, while 901 others were injured.
