Turkish police forces used tear gas and water cannons to disperse a rally staged by some 2,000 persons in Ankara on Monday in protest of what they considered a controversial court ruling. A court ruled earlier today against the detention of a policeman believed to be involved in the killing of a protester in last June and noted that the defendant could be prosecuted via a closed-circuit TV citing security considerations. NTV reported that a large number of demonstrators gathered in front of the court to condemn the verdict and chanted with anti-government slogans.
