The 8th Session of the Conference of State Parties to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) concluded in the Hague on Friday. Speaking to KUNA following the conclusion of the event, the head of the participating Kuwaiti delegation, Ali Al-Thaidi said several issues bearing on pieces of national legislation were discussed as per articles 7 and 10 of the OPCW statutes as for chemical weapons. Progress made by the State of Kuwait in the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) was discussed during the meeting, he said, adding that the conferees stressed the significance of cooperation between Kuwait and the organization in the fields of training courses. The conferees also called on all countries to put the CWC in place by destroying their chemical weapons and promoting international cooperation for using chemical activities for peaceful purposes, he added. Some 190 countries have joined the CWC so far following the membership of Syria and Somalia, the Kuwaiti official pointed out. Also during the OPCW conference, Ambassador Ahmet Uzumcu was re-appointed by acclamation for a second term of office as OPCW Director-General.
