Police in south-western China's Yunnan province on Friday said they were hunting a suspect believed to have killed six people and injured three after opening fire with a semi-automatic weapon, dpa reported.
Shao Zongqi, 37, is suspected of carrying out the attack in Qingkou village in Yunnan's Tengchong county, the county public security office reported on its micro blog account.
The report gave no information about the victims of the attack, which happened on Thursday afternoon when most Chinese families were at home celebrating the arrival of the lunar new year.
Shao, who was from the same village, is believed to have fled in a black jeep after the attack, it said.
The police offered a reward of 200,000 Yuan (33,000 dollars) for information leading to his capture.
