Three people were killed early Sunday morning in a clash with police in La Jigua, a municipality in west Honduras' Copan Department, local police said. A police contingent was ambushed by a group of men, leaving a policewoman, Johana Patricia Garcia, and two alleged criminals, later identified as Juan Miguel Roman Garcia and Roger Edgardo Mendoza Palma, dead. Another two policemen were wounded in the clash. Crime rates have been relatively high in the country. In 2013 alone, 109 mass killings were reported and the murder rate was 83 per 100,000, according to National Autonomous University of Honduras statistics.
