Two workers died on Friday in an accident in one of two mines owned by Iberpotash in the locality of Cabanesses de Suria, close to Barcelona.
Joan Ramon Mitjans (49) and Isaac Closa (37) died "when a large rock around 6 or 7 meters in size separated from the roof and fell on them."
Their companions who were working at the time were able to escape uninjured.
Iberpotash President Isidoro Mata added that the causes of the accident were so far unknown and that the company had opened an investigation to discover "if it was misfortune or whether someone was responsible."
The victims were carrying out repair work on machinery in the mine where 90 people work. The company has suspended all work as a sign of mourning and respect.
