A young fisherman died while five of his companions were rescued almost a week after they Monday.
The survivors as well as the body of the 13-year old fatality were recovered by fishermen off General Luna town in Southern Philippine province of Surigao del Norte at around 9 a.m. Sunday, five days after the victims set out to sea from the province's Socorro town, according to Superintendent Martin Gamba, Caraga police regional spokesperson. "Initial investigation revealed the fishermen onboard a motorized boat sailed last Nov. 5 but were not heard of since," Superintendent Gamba said.
Authorities believed the victims were caught as Super Typhoon Haiyan (local name: Yolanda) brushed the east of the Surigao provinces on Nov. 7 before slamming into the eastern provinces of Samar and Leyte a day after.
The survivors were brought to Siargao District Hospital for health examinations while the body of the fatality was taken to a local funeral parlor, the police official said.
