Palestinian militant groups have announced a unilateral ceasefire after a surge in cross-border attacks between Gaza and Israel.

Egypt had mediated the deal, announced the Hamas movement, which rules the Gaza Strip, and other militant Palestinian groups.

A spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not immediately comment on the announcement.
