The Lebanese army foiled an attempt to transport a large quantity of explosives in a shootout that killed two Syrian nationals, one of whom was wearing an explosive belt. Two Syrians were killed and two others wounded on Thursday when they clashed with the army in Western Bekaa, the Daily Star newspaper quoted a security source as saying. The gunmen opened fire at an army patrol after it tried to stop their vehicle – a white van with a Syrian license plate – in Hawsh al-Harimeh, the source said, Al-Alam reported. Two Syrians were killed and two others wounded in the confrontation that ensued, the source added. The military made its way to Hawsh al-Harimeh after receiving reports that four individuals were caught transporting bombs, a statement by the army said late Thursday. One of the Syrian nationals who was killed in the shootout was wearing an explosive belt, it added. The army arrested the two wounded and confiscated 250 kilograms of explosives along with detonators.
