Iraq's air force started on Monday an operation to liberate Tel Afar from the terrorist group of Daesh, said the defense ministry.

Jet fighters have launched airstrikes, targeting Daesh fortifications, the ministry's spokesman Mohammad Al Khudari told Russia Today.

Iraqi forces are waiting for the airstrikes to be finished, to launch their ground offensive .

He expected Tel Afar to be liberated in parallel with Hawijah.
