Tehran - FNA
At least five people were killed on Wednesday and more than 10 others wounded in a truck bomb attack targeted Iraqi police near the city of Baquba in Iraq's Eastern province of Diyala, a provincial police source said. The attack occurred in the morning when a suicide bomber rammed his explosive-laden truck into the entrance of a police station in the town of al-Salam, some 65 km Northeast of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity. The huge blast destroyed part of the police station and nearby buildings, the source said, adding that many dead and wounded are the policemen. The death toll could rise as ambulances, police and civilian vehicles were evacuating the wounded people to the town's hospital and medical centers, while security forces and rescue team were removing the debris looking for more victims, the source added. Diyala province which stretches from the Eastern edges of Baghdad to the Iranian border East of the country has long been a volatile area since the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 despite repeated military operations against the militant groups. Iraq is witnessing its worst eruption of violence in recent years. According to the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq, almost 7, 000 Iraqis were killed and over 16,000 others injured from January to October this year.
