Sanaa - Ali Rabea
A Yemeni military intelligence official survived a botched assassination attempt on Tuesday, after unknown assailants targeted his car with an explosive device on his way to work.
Sources within the Yemeni Ministry of Defence told Arabstoday that head of military intelligence Mohamed Hageb survived the attack after militants placed a homemade bomb under his car-seat, reportedly detonating the device with a mobile phone. Hageb was injured, while his car was destroyed.
Hageb has withdrawn from accusing any specific group for the incident. One source, who refused to be named, told Arabstoday that al-Qaeda had been involved in the attack.
The attack came just one day after two Yemeni intelligence officers were assassinated in the country. Security sources speculated that al-Qaeda has carried out similar attacks in recent months, leading to the deaths of around 70 Yemeni officials.
