Cairo - Ali Ragab
Islamist demonstrations in Egypt on Friday saw the emergence of Islamic White Bloc, an anti-violence group claiming to counter the threat from the revolutionary Black Bloc group.
White Bloc members were seen in the Islamist protest at Cairo University. They wore white shirts and raised banners reading: \"White. Lock against sabotage\". Members described Black Bloc as a \"sabotage group,\" financed by figures from the previous regime. They said that their organisation aims to confront those who work to bring Egyptian production to a halt.\"
Sources said that a number of Islamist groups are supporting White Bloc to counter acts of violence committed by Black Bloc during the recent demonstrations.
Building and Development Party leader Tarek el-Zomor described the concept of White Bloc as \"a noble idea.\"
Egyptian political expert Deyaa Rashwan warned against the appearance of such organisations, adding that it could lead to a war of militias in the future. He explained that political parties have not supported the Black Bloc, while the White Bloc is being supported by Islamists, a matter which could increase the wave of tension.
Black Bloc group emerged during the recent \"January 25\" revolution anniversary demonstrations. The anarchist movement has claimed responsibility for several attacks targeting governmental facilities.
