Tensed calm prevailed near Azhar University and its dorms after a home-made bomb went off close to a bus in Cairo's eastern district of Nasr City.
Minor clashes erupted between students and residents as security forces prevented students from reaching the site of the blast.
Meanwhile, few students made their way to the university.
Police stepped up security measures around the university and its dorms.
The bomb was planted on a pedestrian island and exploded as the public bus passed by in the eastern district.
