The political leadership of the main Syrian opposition group met in Istanbul on Saturday with the only candidate for the ?presidency of the interim Syrian government, Dr Ahmad Toumeh. The leadership of the Syrian National Coalition listened to a detailed explanation of Toumeh’s vision Toumeh for the interim government, if he was appointed. Dr Toumeh said it was important for the ?government to attempt to work inside Syria as an administrative authority, cooperating with local ?councils and civil and revolutionary authorities, as well as drafting an urgent plan to improve services, education and health.? The presidential hopeful is a prominent political figure in Syria, where he was detained for several years. He is one of the founding signatories of the 2005 anti-regime Damascus Declaration, and has been a part of the popular uprising in Syria since its beginnings in 2011. ? The president of the interim government should be appointed at a meeting ?of the General Assembly of the Syrian National Coalition, expected soon.
