South Sudan’s presidential palace has disputed reports over one million dollars was stolen from President Salva Kiir’s office, launching an investigation into the crime. Unknown suspects entered the presidential compound and stole the cash, a Sudan Tribune report said on Wednesday. Kiir’s office disputed the amounts however, claiming the number of South Sudanese pounds and US dollars taken were in the thousands, not millions. Government sources claimed the amount stolen came to approximately SSP176,000 and $14,000 respectively. "At no time was the actual office of the president compromised or vulnerable, as it is located in a separate and fully enclosed compound,” presidential sources said in a statement. “Security is under control and the safety of the President was never compromised.” Kiir’s government will launch a criminal investigation into the incident, he said in a statement on Wednesday.
