Mauritanian trade unions have declared their solidarity with the family of assassinated Tunisian left-wing leader, Chokri Belaid, in a statement on Sunday evening. The Confederate General for Mauritanian Workers [CGTM] celebrated Belaid’s work in politics. “Belaid devoted his life to struggle for freedom, democracy and social justice,” the union said. Trade unionists attacked what they called a “heinous crime,” after the Democratic Patriots leader was shot repeatedly outside his home on Wednesday morning. “This assassination aimed at silencing voices struggling for dignity and freedom, and leads Tunisia towards a cycle of violence,” the CGTM warned. The statement called on Tunisian authorities to conduct impartial investigations into the killing.
