Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz has launched a legal battle against French parliamentarian Noël Mamère, following remarks made by the politician accusing the President of drug trafficking in his home country.
French broadsheet Le Monde reported that Abdel Aziz had instructed international law firm Watson, Farley & Williams to file a slander lawsuit against the Green MP on Monday.
French courts have previously found Mamère guilty of slandering public figures at least four times, Le Monde reported, including once against former French President Jacque Chirac.
The Mauritanian President’s case will reportedly challenge the “feebleness” of Mamère’s allegations.
