A Ukrainian doctor and his wife have been released after being kidnapped for almost two months, while a Libyan doctor and three nurses were also released after a one-week kidnapping, a health official in Benghazi said Saturday.
The Ukrainian doctor and his wife, also a nurse, are in good health, Hani Al-Oraibi, media director of Al-Hawari General Hospital in Benghazi announced earlier today.
In a statement to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), Ukrainian Ambassador to Libya Mykola Nahorny said that the embassy contacted the Ukrainian nationals and that they are in good health and intend to keep on working in Libya.
He pointed out that both were abducted on September 18. They were released Friday night.
Meanwhile, Al-Oraibi also announced that a Libyan doctor and three nurses, who were kidnapped a week ago, were released Friday also.
He also added that a lab technician was shot dead in front of the hospital entrance yesterday.
Benghazi, a stronghold of Islamist militias, witnessed a string of kidnappings targeting foreigners and Libyans alike in the restive city.
Libya has been rocked by political instability since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that toppled and killed totalitarian leader Muammar Gaddafi.
