General Prosecutor Hisham Barakat has opened an inquiry into the death of a protester in Cairo's Talaat Harb Square on Saturday.
The female protester was killed in a protest organized by the Socialist Popular Alliance Party in central Cairo.
Protesters started shooting off fireworks at security forces securing the square, prompting forces to use tear gas, according to the interior ministry.
At least six people were arrested in the violence, it added.
