A high-ranking officer close to Syrian President Bashar Al Assad was killed in an attack by Syrian Free Army elements east of the capital Damascus.

Syrian opposition sources, according to Al Arabia satellite channel, identified the officer as Abdel Zin Saqr, pointing out that he was a member of the Republican Guard and that he appeared with Assad months ago.
