Egypt’s Interior Ministry has called for calm amid violent clashes between opposition and Islamist protesters left over 40 people wounded on Friday. Ministry officials claimed they had taken “all necessary measures” to secure Cairo’s streets after clashes sparked off outside pro-Muslim Brotherhood protests at the capital’s Supreme Court building. Islamists and a range of opposition activists exchanged stones, buckshot and Molotov cocktails before Central Security Forces intervened with tear gas to disperse crowds. Emergency services chief Mohammed Sultan confirmed the casualty count had risen to 48 by Friday evening, updating an earlier figure of 39. Some of the injuries had been caused by gunfire, he said.
