AUC President Francis Ricciardone

The American University in Cairo (AUC) said Sunday it handed 5,000 Islamic, Coptic, Pharaonic, Greek and Roman artifacts over to the Egyptian government.
In a statement, the AUC said the collection was legally acquired in the 1960s.
AUC President Francis Ricciardone said the important artifacts, legally owned, maintained and protected by the university for many years, were handed to the Ministry of Antiquities.
The artifacts were used for teaching purposes, he added.
The statement said the artifacts were unearthed by an AUC excavation team led by late Professor George Scanlon in 1964 in Cairo's Fustat.
