Prime Minister Sherif Ismail

The Fund of Education Development under Prime Minister Sherif Ismail agreed on Monday to settle the status of the Egyptian E-Learning University legally and financially.

The university's status will be settled through a committee led by the higher education minister and some fund members, spokesman for the cabinet Hossam Qawish said after the fund board meeting with the attendance of the ministers of higher education, trade and industry and planning.

Among the alternatives the committee will discuss is turning the private non-profit university to a NGO university and setting up a board of trustees, the spokesman added.

In June 2007, the Cabinet approved the establishment of the Egyptian E-Learning University. The presidential decree was issued in August 16, 2008 No,233 to be the First ever qualified Egyptian university for distance learning running by system and technology based on E-Learning.

In October 2009 the university started its educational activities with two programs: "Computer and Information Technology and Business Administration" in three centers inside Ain Shams University, Tanta University and Assiut University.

Also today, the fund board agreed to give the interim headquarters of the EELU, which it has been occupying since 2007, to the Cairo University, granting the e-learning university a deadline till the end of this year to evacuate it
