‘Arab Idol’ runner up Moroccan Dounia Batma was chosen to be part of the prestigious Moroccan music festival Mawazine in its 11th round in Rabat. Dounia had given an exquisite performance on the eight day of the festival’s events. Despite the success of her performance, Dounia’s gown gave rise to criticism as many considered it insulting to the traditional Moroccan dress ‘Al Quftan’. Dounia had transformed the traditional conservative Quftan to a sleeveless dress aggravating many Moroccans. What had made matters worse for Donia was the fact that Syrian singer Rouwaida Attieh had worn the traditional Moroccan Quftan in its original form as a sign of respect to Moroccans and their traditional dress. Many saw Dounia’s choice of gown as a bad one that showed no respect to Moroccan tradition.
