South Africa's President Jacob Zuma said Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe is held in his house safe and sound.

Zuma said he had spoken to Mugabe who had indicated that he "was confined to his home but said that he was fine".

The move may be a bid to replace Mugabe with his sacked deputy, Emmerson Mnangagwa, the BBC said.
