U.S Defense Secretary James Mattis arrived in Kabul on Friday on an unannounced visit, a spokesman for the Nato and U.S. forces in Afghanistan, Martin O'Donnell, said.
According to dpa, the high-ranking official is being accompanied by the Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Joseph Dunford.
According to local media reports, Mattis is expected to meet U.S. Army General Austin Scott Miller, the new commander of Resolute Support and U.S. forces in Afghanistan.
