Despite clashes over Syria and Ukraine, President Barack Obama has agreed to meet Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin next week, a senior US official said Thursday, saying to reject the offer of talks would be "irresponsible."

"The two presidents will meet in the context of the UN General Assembly at the request of President Putin," the official told AFP. "It would be irresponsible not to test whether we can make progress through high-level engagement."
