US President Barack Obama on Tuesday waded into the boiling debate over Britain's membership in the European Union, telling Prime Minister David Cameron his country's place was within the 28-country bloc.

The White House said that Obama had spoken to Cameron amid talks to avoid a British EU exit, and "reaffirmed continued US support for a strong United Kingdom in a strong European Union."
