Two Palestinians attempted to stab Israeli border police Monday in the southern West Bank city of Hebron before being shot, with one killed, police said, the latest incident in a new surge of violence.

The second perpetrator was in critical condition while no officers were known to have been wounded in the incident near a flashpoint holy site, a police spokeswoman said in a statement.
