Harry Belafonte reaches deal with Martin Luther King Jr estate

Singer and activist Harry Belafonte will get to keep three of Martin Luther King Jr.'s documents after reaching an agreement with the estate of the slain civil rights leader. The singer said the estate improperly tried to block him from auctioning off the documents given to him by King and King's widow, Coretta Scott King, in 2008. The couple's estates said Belafonte "wrongfully acquired" the documents, which were expected to fetch about $1.8 million at auction. They include an outline from a speech King gave on Vietnam, notes for another speech that were in King's pocket when he was assassinated and a condolence letter from U.S. President Lyndon Johnson to Scott-King. "The parties have reached a compromise, the terms of which are confidential and have resulted in Mr. Belafonte retaining possession of the documents," a statement said. Details of the agreement were confidential. It's unclear if Belafonte still plans to auction off the items.
