Singer Afroman is facing assault charges after he was caught on camera punching a female fan who wandered onto the stage while he was playing in Mississippi.
Video taken during the Tuesday performance by Afroman, real name Joseph Foreman, 40, shows a woman walk onto the stage while he was playing at Kress Live in Biloxi following the city's Mardi Gras parade.
The singer can be seen turning around in the video and punching the woman in the face. The woman falls to the ground, bleeding and crying while Afroman continues the concert.
A second video shows a friend of the woman help her off stage and apparently move to confront Afroman, but he backed off when the musician held up his guitar in a threatening way.
Kress Live owner Chase Taylor said the concert was cut short.
"Afroman was about five songs into his set when the incident occurred. We pulled the plug on him, and security met him at the bottom of the stage to escort him outside, where he was taken into custody," Taylor told WLOX-TV.
A representative for Afroman told Billboard magazine the "Because I Got High" singer was surprised by the woman's presence on stage.
"This was a completely involuntary reflex reaction to people infringing on his stage space," the rep said. "It was uncharacteristic behavior that was initiated by outside uncontrolled forces."
Biloxi police said the woman filed an affidavit against Afroman, and he was arrested on a misdemeanor simple assault charge. He posted $330 bond and was released.
