The US outlined measures on Thursday that will ease the embargo against Cuba and open the country to greater travel, trade and financial activities, the Treasury Department announced.
The regulations, which take effect on Friday, will allow Americans to travel to Cuba for reasons such as family visits, education and religion. In addition, Americans will be allowed to bring home USD 100 in alcohol and tobacco from Cuba.
This includes Cuban cigars that were highly sought after during the embargo. American credit and debit cards may be used and US citizens can bring home a total of USD 400 worth of Cuban goods. "Today's announcement takes us one step closer to replacing out of date policies that were not working and puts in place a policy that helps promote political and economic freedom for the Cuban people," said Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew in a statement.
"These changes will have a direct impact in further engaging and empowering the Cuban people, promoting positive change for Cuba's citizens."
